It's time once again for the butterflies to return to Mexico. The Miami Herald points out in an interesting story that every autumn millions of monarch butterflies travel from Canada to Mexico, filling the sky over the central Mexican state of Michoacan with beautiful orange- and yellow-winged creatures who prefer to winter in a warm, pleasant climate. Makes perfect sense to me, and to Mexican government and conservation officials as well, who have set up five sanctuaries where the monarchs can laze about among pine and fir trees and reproduce in peace while enjoying ideal temperature and moisture conditions. Human beings, of course, can enjoy these perfect conditions as well, while observing these amazing bugs in their natural winter habitat. Rosario, the original butterfly sanctuary in Mexico, is more than 20 years old and has two zones that form a Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve which is protected from logging and development. Guests at the stylish W Mexico City or any of Starwood's properties throughout the country might enjoy a trip to a monarch butterfly sanctuary to see how these graceful insects spend their winters.
