Tbilisi's Sulfur Baths
Tuesday May 13, 2008
After taking in the cathedrals and museums of the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, reward your weary body with a soak in one of the city's famous sulfur baths. A deep sulfur spring feeds the city with naturally heated mineral water, and bath houses have proliferated across the city for more than a thousand years, offering residents and visitors the opportunity to wash away the stresses of the day. A soak in a sulfur bath is still very much a Tbilisi ritual, and bath houses range from inexpensive communal affairs to opulent environments where visitors can enjoy a soak and a scrub and feel like Georgian royalty. Many people believe that the somewhat "fragrant" water, with its high concentration of minerals, has curative powers and helps restore good health. But even if it's no different than regular water, you'll enjoy a unique experience in this ancient city and come out clean and refreshed. Guests at the Sheraton Metechi Palace Hotel, Tbilisi should ask the helpful staff at the front desk for recommendations of some of the better baths in the area.
