Just outside Tucson in the picturesque Sonoran Desert lies the largest non-government funded aerospace museum in the world. Opened in 1976 with just 75 airplanes, the Pima Air & Space Museum has grown to include over 275 vintage aircraft and spacecraft, with everything from nimble fighter jets and attack helicopters to twin-engine jet airliners like the Douglas C-9B Skytrain II. In addition to the aircraft, which are divided between five hangars and on display outside as well, visitors can drop by an authentic World War II barracks, a space gallery with a training version of an Apollo space capsule, and the 390th Memorial Museum, which features a fully restored B17 G "Flying Fortress," an impressive airplane if there ever was one. If you still haven't gotten your fill of flying machines after an hour or two at the museum, board a bus for a tour of the Boneyard, an Air Force storage and maintenance facility that takes care of more than 4,400 aircraft. The sheer scale of it all boggles the mind. Guests at the Sheraton Tucson Hotel & Suites or any of Starwood's Tucson properties might enjoy a visit to this sprawling tribute to the miracle of flight.

More History Comes Alive at Seoul's Korean Folk Village
Monday June 29, 2009Until science can come up with a working time machine, a living museum in Seoul might just be the next best thing. The Korean Folk Village is an outdoor ethnographic museum that recreates a rural Korean village as it would have looked several hundred years ago, with houses, work spaces, schools, and religious temples crafted to exacting detail. Most importantly, the museum is staffed with historic "re-enactors" in period costume who are well-versed in ancient customs and traditions. They're more than happy to show visitors how things were done in the old days, from growing crops like sweet potato, radish, and ginseng to practicing chaesang, the craft of working with bamboo strips to create sheaths, boxes, and hats. Be sure to stick around for the music, as performers celebrate the successful harvest with Farmer's Music and Dance, which uses Korean percussion instruments and wind instruments to triumph their good fortune. From L-shaped farmers houses from the north to low-slung, breezy abodes from Jeju and Ullung Islands, visitors can get a unique perspective on the daily lives of generations of Koreans. The museum is convenient to four Starwood hotels, including the brand-new Sheraton Incheon Hotel.

More Open-Air Arias at Opera Holland Park in London
Friday June 26, 2009There are few experiences more romantic than going to see a live outdoor opera performance on a beautiful summer's evening, so if you're an opera fan in London this summer, you're in luck. This year's Opera Holland Park season features performances of several renowned operas, including Hansel and Gretal, Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera, and Puccini's immortal love story, La Boheme, whose five-word synopsis, "poet finds key, unlocks heart," has inspired legions of first-time opera fans. The operas are performed under a temporary canopy in London's beautiful Holland Park in the borough of Kensington, so while you'll feel the soft breezes across your cheeks, you'll also be protected from London's notorious summer rain. Naturally, such a genteel pastime requires proper refreshments, so patrons can drop by one of two bars in the foyer area of the theater for wine, beer, spirits, and that classic British beverage, Pimm's, along with a selection of sandwiches and sweet and savory plates. And if you'd like to make a proper evening out of it, order a pre-made Cooks and Partners picnic, which will be served at your reserved table on the picnic deck in a wicker basket with fine china plates. It doesn't get much more civilized than that. Starwood has hotels throughout London, including the nearby Sheraton Belgravia Hotel, London.

More Destination Spotlight - Buenos Aires - Neighborhood Watch: Palermo Soho
Thursday June 25, 2009From the windows of the Buenos Aires Hotel & Convention Center, the views are unbeatable. A sprawling city, comprised of myriad neighborhoods stretches out below. From San Telmo with its tango plazas, and Recoleto with its marvelous Design Center, each has its own distinct style. But no neighborhood can compete with Palermo Soho when it comes to shopping. The trendy barrio boasts the largest concentration of cool shops in the city.
Start your excursion at Calma Chicha, a colorful emporium filled with throw pillows and butterfly chairs covered in vivid fabrics and soft cowhides. It's smack dab in the middle of Honduras, the district's main thoroughfare stretching from Avenida Raul Scalabrini Ortiz to Avenida Juan B. Justo. A few doors down, Papelera Palermo is a stationary lover's dream come true. Stock up on wonderfully rustic photo albums, notebooks with Aztec inspired covers, and paper in every hue imaginable. For candy colored soaps head down Gurruchaga to a modern boutique where the Sabater siblings continue the family business by offering time-tested soaps reinvented for a new generation. If you can tear your nose away from the box of magnolia scented soap leaves, loop over to Armenia where you can plop down on one of Bar 6's velvet settees or sidle up to a farm table and refuel on tostados and stir fries before heading back out for the second leg of your Palermo Soho spree. You won't want to miss the dozens of independent designer fashion boutiques that line these picturesque streets. Do you have a favorite? We'd love to know. Watch the video for more great ideas on what to do in Palermo Soho.

More Destination Spotlight - Buenos Aires - An Urban Oasis at Parque Tres de Febrero
Tuesday June 23, 2009
Sometimes it seems like Buenos Aires never slows down, but there is one place porteƱos go when they need to escape to a peaceful, natural setting. Located in the Palermo neighborhood, Parque Tres de Febrero is a breathtaking 25 hectare urban oasis crisscrossed with walking paths and dotted with picnic areas that are perfect for soaking up the sun. Among the loveliest green spaces in South America, the park was opened in 1875 on property that once belonged to strongman Juan Manuel de Rosas, whose overthrow freed up huge tracts of land to public use. World-renowned architects and designers improved it throughout the years, adding a rose garden, botanical gardens, and a variety of outdoor works of art. It's a perfect place to relax and catch your breath after an evening of tango, but those who crave a bit more stimulation can explore the largest Japanese garden outside Japan or head to the Galileo Galilei Planetarium, a striking modernist structure that can project 8,900 stars, constellations and nebulas in its domed theater. As for me, I'll head to the boating lake and rent a rowboat for a tranquil afternoon out on the water, followed by an inspiring walk through the Poet's Garden. It's the perfect antidote to the intensity of Buenos Aires, and convenient to several Starwood properties, including the Sheraton Libertador Hotel.
