The waterfalls have arrived in New York City, and they're a sight to behold. This summer the artist Olafur Eliasson is using the city's abundant water resources as a canvas for a project called The New York City Waterfalls, which involves the creation of four enormous waterfalls strategically positioned along the East River and New York Harbor. Powerful yet environmentally-advanced pumps unleash a torrent of water from more than 100 feet in the air, which crashes into the river and harbor in a spectacle of sight and sound. Visitors can enjoy great views of the waterfalls from both Brooklyn and Manhattan, but the best vantage point might be right in between the two. That's right, take a stroll across the pedestrian promenade of the Brooklyn Bridge and take in the falls and the city in all its artistry. The New York experience just doesn't get any better than that. The waterfalls are in operation from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. through October 13. Starwood has hotels throughout the city, including the W New York - Union Square, the St. Regis New York, and the Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers.

Friday July 4, 2008Milk Carton Boat Races and More at the Minneapolis Aquatennial
Friday July 4, 2008Every July, Minneapolis goes a little bit water crazy. Since 1940, the city has celebrated the "ten best days of summer" with a tribute to its lakes and rivers known as the Aquatennial, and this year's festival - to be held July 12-27 - promises to be one of the wildest ever. The festival kicks off in a sporting fashion with the Plaza Tennis Tournament and the Life Time Fitness Triathlon, which will draw some of the most talented athletes in the world. Things get progressively zanier from there, with the Land O' Lakes sandcastle-building competition, the Summer Sounds Gala, and a beach bash with music, food, and games. The most highly anticipated event of the festival, however, is the milk carton race in the waters off Thomas Beach in Lake Calhoun, in which contestants build boats out of milk cartons in the shape of dragons, pirate ships, and the like. The first ship to cross the finish line without sinking wins the hearts and minds of a beautiful city. As with most things in life, style counts for a lot, even if you have to abandon ship mid-voyage. Starwood has several Minneapolis properties, including the stylish W Minneapolis - the Foshay.

More Martinis and IMAX at the Fernbank Museum in Atlanta
Tuesday June 17, 2008
There are often trade-offs in travel. You can do something educational and intellectually stimulating, such as going to a museum, or you can do something frivolous and fun, like letting loose at a cocktail bar, but you can't do both at the same time. Or can you? The Fernbank Museum of Natural History in Atlanta is bridging the gap between brainy and breezy with its special Martinis & IMAX events, which add an extra element of fun and mischief to the normally cerebral museum experience. Every Friday at 5:30 p.m., visitors can enjoy cool cocktails, tasty cuisine, amazing films, and live music beneath the world's largest dinosaurs in the museum's cavernous Great Hall. It's a unique perspective on the Giants of the Mesozoic and an amusing welcome to the weekend. In a special tribute to summer on Friday, June 20, (that's the solstice, for those who care to notice such things) the museum will offer special picnic packages with summer-inspired martinis, two IMAX tickets, and a picnic-style dinner for two. It's a fine way to celebrate the first day of summer and all the adventure and fun it represents. Starwood has hotels throughout the Atlanta region, including the stylish W Atlanta - Midtown, whose Whiskey Park lounge is the perfect place to enjoy one more martini before turning in for the night and dreaming of dinosaurs. Happy, friendly, vegetarian dinosaurs.

Of course, as a native New Yorker, my favorite place to indulge (and at $75 for a stack, it's quite a rare indulgence) is Eleni's for a gift box of Butterflies in Nature cookies. These big, beautiful hand iced sugar biscuits come in all sorts of colors. Sometimes I feel so guilty for eating them as they look like little works of art. But boy are they good! Eleni's is a little over a mile away from the W New York - Union Square. If you visit after 6 pm each day, enjoy their half off sale on freshly baked treats!

More Starwood Insider - Candice Kraughto - Parsnips at XYZ
Monday June 9, 2008
Candice Kraughto is the director of public relations for Starwood Hotels & Resorts Hawaii, and thelobby.com's expert on the region. This week, she reports on dining in San Francisco.
The first time I tasted parsnips was at XYZ restaurant in the very chic, but cozy W San Francisco. I was having dinner with media and some colleagues from Hawaii including Sumithra and Chef Bart from The Westin Maui Resort & Spa. Chef Bart had just completed a live on-air cooking segment earlier on ABC San Francisco KGO-TV's "View from the Bay." We sat around an elegant round table near the window looking out at 3rd Avenue. The parsnips were positively delicious - why had I never eaten parsnips before? I called my husband excitedly later that night, "It had a savory taste between a creamy potato and a carrot," I raved. I dreamed of eating those parsnips again.
Was it just me? Or do most of people who grow up in Hawaii seldom have an opportunity to experience parsnip perfection? Macaroni and cheese is another mystery.

Remember hearing about that pretty in pink Veuve Clicquot Loveseat by Karim Rashid? That design rock star, arm tats and all, has certainly been busy creating everything curvy, bright and groovy in every angle from furniture to fashion to funky spaces. Every magazine has written about him, and everyone has worked with him... even Dirt Devil.
Keeping things fresh is something he excels in, so it's no surprise he's teamed up again with Veuve Clicquot -- and this time with W Hotels -- to create a design item that not only shines but also keeps your bottle of Veuve Clicquot Rosé super cool.
Rashid's Globalight, a limited-edition piece that's a modern remix on the traditional French chandelier, creates a soft pink halo of LED light and a dream like atmosphere wherever it goes. Globalight is also an isotherm bottle carrier, so your bottle of Veuve Clicquot Rosé will keep its cool up to 4 hours.

More A Golden Dining Opportunity in San Francisco
Monday June 2, 2008
It's always nice to get a deal. Now through June 15, you can eat at some of San Francisco's top restaurants inexpensively thanks to Dine About Town San Francisco. Dozens of restaurants — including the W San Francisco's own XYZ — are serving up three-course prix fixe dinners for $31.95. Many are also offering lunch deals as well, for just $21.95.
So you could lunch on salad and croque monsieur at Absinthe, then head to PJ's Oyster Bed later for what looks to me to be one of the best deals — four courses of Cajun cuisine, not three, plus a "lagniappe" such as a crawfish boudin bite or a jello shot to whet your whistle.
Or have dinner at Circa, recent "Top Chef" contestant Erik Hopfinger's restaurant-lounge, and stick around for dancing afterwards; the discounted meal will help offset the expensive (for SF) drinks.
Destination Spotlight - Chicago - Hit the Beach in the Windy City
Wednesday May 28, 2008Chicago is a city of surprises, and one of its best is revealed every spring with the opening of the city's 33 pristine public beaches. Visitors and residents alike make their way to the expansive shoreline of Lake Michigan, which boasts ribbons of white sand, great swimming and water sports, and tony cafes that seem plucked out of tropical ocean resort towns. For some of the finest summertime people watching, it's hard to top Oak Street Beach. Just north of the Magnificent Mile, it's popular with sun worshipers, in-line skaters, and fans of fine cuisine, who occupy the alfresco tables at the Oak Street Beachstro and enjoy some of the city's freshest seafood with a view of the sparkling blue water. Aspiring athletes and those who love them are drawn to North Avenue Beach, which has not only a great biking and running path, but one of the most competitive beach volleyball scenes in the country. Arrive early to get a prime viewing spot of the sandy action. Starwood has hotels throughout the Windy City, including the W Chicago - Lakeshore and the Four Points by Sheraton Chicago Downtown/Magnificent Mile, which are just minutes from the beach.
Destination Spotlight - Chicago - A City of Music
Wednesday May 28, 2008A few American cities are so linked with their musical heritage that there's just no separating the two: Nashville, New Orleans, Detroit, Chicago. In the early 20th century, when African Americans began venturing north during the "Great Migration," many made their way to the Windy City. They brought their acoustic guitars and harmonicas along, and carried on the Delta blues tradition, but in this big northern city, electric guitars were added, drums, piano, bass, and saxophone joined the fray, and suddenly a new sound emerged, Chicago blues. Since then, myriad forms of music have sprung up, Chicago soul, jazz, gospel, punk, house... even the symphony orchestra is recognized as one of the world's best. From outdoor pavilions, to intimate clubs, full of tradition, and lore, Chicago today is a great place to experience live music.
For jazz, nothing beats The Green Mill, the nation's oldest jazz club, once the stomping ground of Al Capone, and Charlie Chaplin. Some of the world's best players got their start here, and today the club continues to host the greats. Buddy Guy opened his blues club, Legends in 1989. A short walk from W Chicago - City Center, everyone from Bo Diddley to Eric Clapton have graced the stage. Smashing Pumpkins and Liz Phair got their start at the legendary rock venue Metro. Head downstairs to SmartBar, where groundbreaking DJs spin nightly. If the weather's nice, check the Millennium Park concert schedule. From "Audio Picnics," to the "Made in Chicago" series, you'll find something truly splendid, most every night.
