Berlin is a sprawling city, but it's sparsely populated, which is great if it's a quiet spot with a lot of elbow room you're after. Searching for a little more action? Head over to Friedrichshain. A 10-minute taxi ride from The Westin Grand, Berlin, it's a funky neighborhood with a bit of a rock and roll edge. Day or night, you'll always find a mix of both locals and out-of-towners sitting with a tall glass of beer under the wide awning of one of the many sidewalk cafes.

The neighborhood's pastel buildings are awash with street art and graffiti, but don't let irreverent appearances deter you from exploring the myriad shops near Simon-Dach-Strasse and Boxhagenerplatz. One of my favorite stores is called Schwester Herz, which means "Sister Heart" - so cute. It's a beautifully stocked space, brimming with cool design products like Brandenburg Gate cookie cutters and tote bags made from a synthetic fabric developed in the GDR. Around the corner, Olivia offers all sorts of chocolates. Try a few of their miniature cakes and fill your pockets with South American candy bars. One of the area's prettiest streets is Niederbarnimstrasse where you can gawk at Blattwerk's gorgeous floral displays and pick up a silk-screened T-shirt at Heimat. Stick around for dinner and indulge on fabulous Italian food at Miseria e Nobilta, try the "Incredible" pizza at Il Ritrovo, or yummy Vietnamese food at Chily at 17 Niederbarnimstrasse.

If it's a Sunday, most of Friedrichshain's stores will be closed, but  a fantastic flea market brimming with antique treasures sets up on Boxhagenerplatz at 10 in the morning, year round!

The Good Food & Wine Show will dazzle Sydney with a dizzying array of gastronomic delights from July 3-5. This massive touring festival features food classes (cooking, cheese, wine, and more), demonstrations, a huge selection of gourmet food items, and, of course, endless amounts of eating and drinking. One certain highlight will be that all three days will feature demos by international celebrity chef and restaurateur Gordon Ramsay. While Ramsay's brilliantly brash personality famously inflames at other chefs on his television programs Kitchen Nightmares and The F Word, he is captivating as he demonstrates and discusses his true joy in life: Cooking.

The Good Food & Wine Show is conveniently located at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre. This is a very short drive from your room at the The Westin Sydney, making this an event that might be worth your time to attend for even more than one day. Tickets for general entry (which start at $20.50 for children and $27.50 for adults) as well as the specialized sessions such as Gordon Ramsay's appearance, the Cheese Masterclass, Riedel Decanter Bar, or the Riedel Masterclass may be ordered in advance through Australia's Ticketek by phone (13 28 49), online, or admission may be purchased at the door. The schedule is as follows: Friday, July 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with an "After-Dark" session from 5:30-9:30 p.m.; Saturday, July 4 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, July 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If you continue your travels through Australia, you can also catch the Good Food & Wine Show as it lands in Perth on July 31-August 2, or later in the year in Brisbane from November 6-8. It's hard to imagine two better reasons to travel than great eating and drinking, don't you think?

This luxurious hotel is located right on the famous pedestrian thoroughfare, just steps from the hidden gardens and sidewalk cafes that make San Antonio one of the Lone Star State's most charming cities. Phoenix Park Dublin.jpgMost world cities have urban parks where one can retreat for a few hours of solitude amid the chaos, but none do it quite like Dublin. That's because Dublin's Phoenix Park is the largest municipal park within city limits in Europe, with 1,760 acres (712 hectares) of natural green space for visitors to spread out and do pretty much anything they like. Nature buffs can wander acres of gardens and wilderness trails, snapping a few photos of the park's resident herd of fallow deer as they graze on the lawn. Families might want to hit the Dublin Zoo, which provides a home to more than 700 animals from around the world, with everything from snow leopards to Sumatran tigers. Those looking for some history can drop by Ashtown Castle, a restored 15th century tower house located next to the visitor center. If the weather's nice, it's often best to just wander the rolling green hills of the park, taking in monuments such as the Wellington Testimonial (pictured), which commemorates the military victories of the First Duke of Wellington. It's the largest obelisk in Europe. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a greener perspective on the Irish capital. Phoenix Park is minutes from the Westin Dublin.

The Calgary Stampede is the world's largest outdoor rodeo, drawing more than 1.2 million visitors to this glistening metropolis in Alberta, Canada. For ten days every July, cowboys from all over the world compete in thrilling events like bareback riding, steer wrestling, bull riding, and all kinds of displays of horsemanship. One of the most exciting events is the chuckwagon race (see video), where teams of horses pull wagons at blistering speeds around a dirt track. The thundering sound of so many horses racing by is something you won't soon forget. In addition to the rodeo events, the Calgary Stampede features music concerts, agriculture competitions, stage shows, a carnival midway, and a variety of First Nations exhibits that illustrate the art and culture of Canada's native tribes. Canal Saint-Martin.jpgJust when you think you've seen Paris from every angle, something comes along to make you fall in love with it all over again. The city is crisscrossed by miles of picturesque canals, and a summertime boat tour reveals perspectives that are impossible to get anywhere else. Operators such as Canauxrama and Paris Canal offer small-boat tours of the most romantic canals of Paris, such as the breathtaking Canal Saint-Martin (pictured). Lined with ancient trees and spanned by elegant footbridges, it snakes its way through central Paris on a 4.5 kilometer journey from the Canal de l'Ourcq to the river Seine, passing by parks, green spaces, and blocks of trendy shops, bars, and restaurants along the way. Among its highlights is actually a section with no natural light of its own. The boats pass under the mysterious vault of the Place de la Bastille, where the art show Sounds of Light by Japanese artist Keiichi Tahara provides a 21st century counterpoint to the famous 14th century prison. The cruise also goes through four double-locks, rising and falling with the water level as barge captains have been doing since 1815. Starwood has hotels throughout the City of Light, including the Westin Paris.

Sampling San Antonian Specialties

Thursday June 18, 2009

As a border state, Texas food often calls upon the culinary traditions of both sides of the border. Sometimes those cuisines meld together smoothly, as in Tex-Mex — elsewhere it's a little more of a culture clash.

In San Antonio, one of the classic places to taste a little Texan innovation on the food of Mexico is Henry's Puffy Tacos. The feel of the location near the Westin Riverwalk may be a little Disneyfied, but the tacos are still tasty and the ambiance won't bother you a bit if you get a seat outside.

At home you might spot a breakfast burrito on the menu at your favorite brunch spot, but in San Antonio it's more about the breakfast taco. Taco Taco Cafe is the place. The menu boasts more than a dozen versions, but the biggest and most popular is "El Norteño," stuffed with fajitas, beans, avocado and cheese. It'll keep you full at least until dinner, possibly even longer.

In a town full of good burgers, Chris Madrid's stands out as the best. All its burgers are big, fresh and juicy, but the best known is the "macho tostada burger," a half-pounder topped with refried beans, nacho chips, onions, cheddar cheese and salsa. While it may sound like a mess, the flavor is out of this world.
