"Escape the chaos of cancellations, flight delays and crowded departure halls." For air travelers, those words are gold. It's a promise made by Priority Pass, a company which has been providing airport lounges, for frequent fliers, for 15 years. Over 500 lounges at 275 cities, from Atlanta to Zurich are available to Priority Pass members. Of course most first and business class passengers can access their airline's VIP lounge anyway, but with Priority Pass, it doesn't matter what class you're flying, and sometimes the budget calls for economy. There are three levels of membership. Standard includes an annual fee of $99, plus a $27 fee each time you visit a lounge; Standard Plus includes ten free visits for $249 a year; and Prestige allows unlimited lounge visits for a $399 annual fee.

The Continental Presidents Club Lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport just won Priority Pass's prize for best "Worldwide Lounge of the Year." Combine that with Sheraton Newark Hotel's "Park and Fly" package, and you're on your way to a most pleasant journey. Travelers passing through the major New Jersey Hub should book the hotel's weekend or weekday package which includes free parking at the hotel for up to 11 days, and complimentary shuttle service to the airport. After checking in with the airline, Priority Pass members can spend some time in the airport's lovely lounge. Plug in your laptop and finish that memo, fax off those contracts, read the paper, watch the news, have a few drinks, take a shower, or just relax, and watch the flurry of jet activity outside, like in the video, from your big, comfy armchair.

It's a familiar site. A man an emerges from the underground, glances around briefly, and heads off at a brisk pace. Half a block later when the street sign becomes visible, he pivots on his heel. Whoops! Wrong way mister!

Had that guy exited the subway at 42nd Street near Third Avenue; Lexington Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Street; 51st between Lexington and Park; or 53rd between Madison and Park, he would have known exactly which way to go. Because the city of New York, together with the Grand Central Partnership, has affixed large, circular, compass decals to these four locations near Grand Central Station. The gold and black rosettes, 24-inches in diameter, specify north, south, east, and west, and name the closest streets in each direction. This means that if you're staying at the W New York on Lexington Avenue, or the W New York - The Tuscany on 39th Street, walking home from the subway will be a cinch.

If the compasses work well, more will be put in place. Until then, if you're ascending the subway steps in other parts of the city, look around for the Empire State Building to determine north or south; see which way the sun is rising or setting to figure out east and west; or, keep an eye out for someone in a boy scout uniform, and ask if you can take a look at his compass. But seriously, your fellow pedestrian will be more than happy to point you in the right direction, I'm sure. So just go ahead and ask.

Boston's New Mobile Pick-Up

Wednesday September 26, 2007

How much time must we waste in search of that small cardboard sign with our name on it, held aloft by some bleary-eyed car service driver? Or shivering on the cold curb staring at each passing vehicle hoping it's our ride?

The 13.5 million travelers who arrive annually at Boston's Logan Airport can say sayonara to all that, thanks to the new "cellphone parking lot" which allows drivers to park for thirty minutes while they wait for the call. The call from you, who just landed, got your bags, and are ready to be whisked off to the Westin Copley Place in the heart of the Back Bay. The Boston Globe reports it takes five minutes to get from the parking lot, to Terminal E, the airport's farthest terminal.

Logan joins a handful of major airports around the nation that feature these lots, including those in Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. The safety, comfort, and environmental value is great. They cut down on traffic and hazardous emissions from cars circling, and idling, as well as human congestion in the arrivals area. Way to go Logan!

The Best Airports for Layovers

Wednesday May 30, 2007

0521airport.jpgForbes Traveler rated the world's best airport layovers and we have to say they're an interesting bag. Singapore's Changi International boasts a massive shopping mall, a full movie theater, complimentary internet, a gym, shower facilities and unique architecture. Hong Kong International offers semi-private nap rooms for rental. The modernist Zurich Airport is only 15 minutes away from the city center and offers easy access for layover travelers. Munich International (pictured) is the child friendly choice; the airport's massive Kinderland is the perfect choice for travelers with young children. But we're fans of Seoul's Incheon International—which boasts its own in-airport billiards hall and golf course.

Foreign ATM Tips

Friday May 25, 2007

0524chineseatm.jpgAlthough using ATMs is usually the easiest and cheapest way to get cash abroad, the smart traveler can usually save a few dollars by being smart with their ATM usage. MSNBC put together a list of foreign ATM tips that we found extremely helpful. Apart from the fact that too many travelers forget to notify their banks they will be traveling overseas, one of the most important things to watch out for are the higher fees used for international access. Throughout the European Union, a US$5 charge per transaction is becoming more and more frequent—which even applies to checking your balance. Due to these fees, making larger withdrawals while abroad might be a smart idea.

Ryanair Transcontinental Flights?

Thursday April 26, 2007

It's been a while since we last posted about Ryanair, but there's some interesting news about the budget carrier. The Times of London is reporting that Ryanair will offer transcontinental flights within four years. The flights will be branded under a different name than Ryanair, but otherwise things will be the same. There will be the same owner, the same charges for food, drink and in-flight entertainment and even the same airports. To save money, Ryanair will be using BWI, Providence and Islip Macarthur airport for flights to Europe—which will be the first international flights from most of these. Ryanair has not made a formal announcement yet, but CEO Michael O'Leary confirmed the plans to Flight International magazine.
