If you think all the great American museums are confined to a handful of big cities, think again. The Science Museum Oklahoma is located in the heart of the cowboy capital of Oklahoma City, and it's so much more than just a science museum. It's a collection of museums and interactive learning environments that includes more than 350 hands-on science exhibits, a planetarium, a large-format dome-screen theater, botanical gardens, the Red Earth Museum, and the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum. But as far as science is concerned, they've got it covered, with exhibits grouped around themes like perception, light, sound, life sciences, energy, and meteorology. A tribute to aviation and space exploration, meanwhile, includes an impressive collection of vintage aircraft and memorabilia as well as a Mercury capsule simulator, so visitors can get a feel for what it was like to occupy the first American manned spacecraft to orbit the earth in 1962. It's out of this world. Guests at the Sheraton Oklahoma City Hotel or any of Starwood's properties in the area will find endless amusements at this surprising wild west attraction.

Starpick the Sheraton Oklahoma City

Friday September 7, 2007

exhi_grea1.jpgIf you've ever wanted to visit Oklahoma City, here's a great opportunity. The Sheraton Oklahoma City Hotel is one of this week's participating Starpicks properties, which is great news for impulsive travelers. Last-minute rates at this premiere downtown property are at least 20% off regular rates for stays during the next two weekends, so come and see what all the excitement is about in this classic western capital.

At the city's Bricktown entertainment district, for example, you can shop, eat, and enjoy a cocktail in a scenic location as you watch the sunlight shimmer across the spectacular mile-long canal that runs through it. You might be surprised to find a water taxi in Oklahoma, but Water Taxi of Oklahoma City offers one of the best ways to get around town, with regular water taxi service as well as narrated canal cruises, cocktail cruises, and special Bricktown events. And if you happen to feel the need to see a gorilla (hey, it could happen), drop by the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden. Its Great EscAPE exhibit (pictured) has one of the country's finest collections of gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans in a new $6.6 million primate habitat.

Back at the hotel, you can savor a hand-carved steak at the Aria Grill Restaurant, followed by a classic martini cocktail at the Aria Grill Lounge. Sounds like an enjoyable time to me. You never know where your impulses will take you next, so check the list of Starpicks properties and think about your next great escape.
